Polymer Clay
Faux Cinnabar
BETTER PICTURES WITH MORE ACCURATE COLORS COMING IN 1-2 DAYS!!!
THERE ARE NO MORE REAL CINNABAR JEWELRY MADE, & THE ONES ALREADY IN EXISTENCE CAN NO LONGER BE WORN! WHY?
Cinnabar is a sulfide mineral with a very high content of mercury and as such, is now considered dangerous to Humans as jewelry on the skin. Through the ages, many beautiful pieces of art were made out of cinnabar and some still are in Asia, but jewelry are no longer produced. (Yet, some retailers will still claim that what they are selling is real cinnabar.)
With cinnabar unavailable and dangerous, what better way is there to still enjoy it than to make faux cinnabar with polymer clay? With the right mix of colors and a nice "aging" effect, it can look just like the original!
I made the pendant and the 2 "cinnabar" beads in March 2012 and it was one of my first faux attempts with polymer clay. I finally set them in a necklace a few days ago. The black and marbled red beads are glass and the closure is a simple bronze colored toggle clasp. (The photo does not do the red color justice as the cinnabar is a deeper red in reality and the marbled glass beads match it.) Thank you for looking!
